IDF soldiers are starting to use a wordpress website for their own purposes, in a move that is likely to open a Pandora’s box of potential security breaches.
The new plugin, WordPress for IDF soldiers, is being developed for use by troops who have to deal with the “very real security concerns of the modern world,” according to IDF spokeswoman Brig.-Gen. Avital Leibovitz.
The IDF uses wordpress, a free and open source-based software platform, to manage its various departments and units, including its military.
It also maintains a large online database of thousands of thousands emails.
Leibovits comments echo those of a government spokesman who said earlier this month that the IDF was exploring the possibility of using the software.
The decision comes as the Israeli government has recently been criticized for its lax security measures and for allowing Israeli citizens to carry weapons inside the country.
In addition, it has been criticized by human rights groups and human rights organizations for its handling of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which Israel says has been declared a “humanitarian catastrophe” by the United Nations.
Israel’s government has been grappling with the potential security risks posed by wordpress as it grapples with the spread of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS.
The Islamic State has seized large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and is battling the Israeli military for control of the territory in both countries.
